There are several benefits in conducting a preliminary trademark search prior to trademark filing, however there are two very important reasons to conduct a trademark search:

1. It is important to know that you are the only person using your mark. If you find other marks in commerce that share similarities you may want to change your business or product name before moving forward to registration.

2. You will save money by doing prior research of your mark. If there are similar marks (in name and similar in the goods or services provided) already filed with the USPTO, the USPTO may reject your application, if for any reason there might be a likelihood of confusion.
